　　Sumy Medical Institute was founded in 1992 as the Medical Faculty of Sumy State University. Such scholars and teachers, as Prof. Markevich V.E., Prof. Ataman A.V., Prof. Sykora V.Z. were at the source of the institute.　　The Institute has two faculties: Medical and Postgraduate Medical Education and departments:　　Department of Human Anatomy　　Department of Biophysics, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Biomolecular Engineering　　Department Hygiene and Ecology of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology　　Department of Infection Disease with Epidemiology　　Department of Orthopedics, Traumatology and Emergency Conditions　　Department of Pathomorphology　　Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology　　Department of Physiology　　Department of Internal Medicine　　Department of Social Medicine　　Department of General Surgery　　Department of Neurology　　Department of Pediatrics　　Department of Pediatrics and Postgraduate Education　　Department of Surgery　　Department of Family Medicine　　Medical Institute provides training on the specialties: “General Medicine”, “Prophylactic Medicine” and “Stomatology”. Postgraduation education training on the specialty: “Therapy”, “Surgery”, “General practice, Family Medicine”, “Obstetrics and Gynecology”, “Infectious Disease”, “Pediatrics”, followed by specialization.　　The Medical Institute carries out research in the following areas:　　Medical and biological aspects of water and salt and electrolyte metabolism of the body in health and disease　　The role of the allelic polymorphism in the development of pathological processes and disease　　Creating a biocompatible nanocomposite materials　　Мicroelementhoses study　　The Institute has the following laboratories:　　Scientific Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Studies　　Pathology Research Center　　Center for Morphological Studies　　Regional Centre for Environmental, Сhemical and Toxicological Monitoring and Biomedical Research　　Laboratory of Biomaterials　　Students and academic staff have an opportunity to enter PhD programs of 9 specialties. At present time, 50 graduate students and 3 doctoral students are studying for receiving academic degree. Currently, work is done by one individual research grant of the President of Ukraine.
