Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents should reward children with money when they get good grades.
Sample Writing:
Should parents reward children with cash when they score high in their report cards? Opinions vary. Some people believe that giving children money as a prize is likely to cause money-worship and the disappearance of real motivation, for students will regard money, not the study per se as the most important thing. However, I see no harm in giving children a reasonable amount of money as a reward for obtaining high marks. As a matter of fact, children can value hard work, learn money management skills, and gain motivation if they get cash for good academic performance.
To begin with, by giving money as a bonus for high grades, parents can conveniently tell children that only by working hard, can people earn money. In other words, hard work deserves money. Gradually, the right principle can be engraved in students’ minds. I remember that when I was young, my mother would give me 10 dollars if I ranked among the top 10 in class. She told me that the money she gave me was given by her boss because she worked diligently and I also deserved it because I did my school job well. In the future, she said, the maxim would not change: No work, no money. Now, I am an adult and I still cherish my mom’s words: There is no such thing as a free lunch and I must work hard to earn money.
The second benefit is that children will learn how to properly manage money. After giving children money, parents are well-advised to not only tell children that the money is a present for working hard, but also have the responsibility to teach children how to use the money. Let us suppose that a child receives 50 dollars for a decent grade. Parents can give advice and guidance concerning the use of the 10 dollars from the said amount. For example, if I were the mother, I would tell my kid that approximately 10 dollars could be used for buying a book or a magazine; about 30 dollars could be used to buy toys and snacks, and the rest of the money could be used for charitable activities. In this way, a child can learn about money management techniques and because some of the money is asked to be devoted into charity organizations, the child is more likely to develop into a generous and kind man.
Last but not least, students gain motivation by receiving money. Money is a universal reward, because money can buy almost everything. So if you promise your child 100 dollars after he does well in his examinations, he will be more than likely be willing to study diligently, for he may have a secret and long-desired thing to buy. Besides, with money to dispose, kids are more likely to have the feeling of being an adult, thus gaining the drive of excelling at school. My brother is a perfect example. He loves receiving money after exams and he is motivated to do even better whenever mom guarantees to give him money for a higher score. The reason is simple: He has a crush on a little girl in his class and he wants to buy her some gifts but is too embarrassed to tell us. If we are rewarded money, we cannot only buy our beloved ones gifts, but also make progress in our study, which is like killing two birds with one stone.
From the above discussion, we can draw the conclusion that using money as a reward is a justifiable and recommendable idea, for kids can learn the value of diligence, acquire skills of dealing with money, and get inspiration to perform better in school work.(620)
