Brave New World, a classic by Aldous Huxley, is one that made me think and question. (need a stronger intro) It was not the provocative themes of promiscuity, anti – monogamy, and drug indulgence that intrigued me, but rather the new world the novel took place in. I was initially drawn to the thought of a utopian society - one in which moral repercussions are nonexistent and happiness can be achieved through a simple soma dosage. However, Brave New World raises the question – what is the price of happiness? Although it appears promising to live in a society where people are conditioned to love their life, it merely a reflection of John Rawl’s theory of the veil of ignorance. To live in this new world is in direct opposition to the values I cherish today: freedom of expression, pursuit of knowledge, and independent thinking.

Brave New World also raises terrifying reality. Aldous Huxley depicted a likely future in which we are sedated by the government and taken further away from being independent and innovative free thinkers. It reminded me of our own present society, where although the conformity of good looks, grades, and behavior is encouraged and accepted (find one word that describes both), there is a great number of people who are genuinely unhappy. The failure of materialism is prevalent as although we seem to have so much, many still experience isolation and suicidal thoughts. Just like Helmholtz, I am inspired by this utopia turned dystopia to not take what is spoon fed to me at face value and instead challenge and think critically about the world around me and myself.
