　　l 破折号

　　破折号在GMAT里的用法：用于插入语，解释说明(代替冒号或分号)，话语/语义的中断和转折，反讽。

　　补充说明的作用：

　　A mixture of poems and short fiction, Jean Toomer's Cane has been called one of the three best novels ever written by a Black American—the others being Richard Wright's Native Son and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man.

　　反讽或表达意外：

　　Only seven people this century have been killed by the great white shark, the man-eater of the movies—fewer than have been killed by bee stings.

　　l 分号

　　1. 分号连接的两个分句都必须是完整的句子，即有完整的主谓或主谓宾结构。

　　╳ Andrew and Lisa are inseparable; doing everything together.(第二分句缺主语)

　　√ Andrew and Lisa are inseparable; they do everything together.

　　(they就是指Andrew and Lisa，分句的所表达的内容是能联系起来的，正确)

　　2. 分号所连接的两个分句虽然能独立成句，但是必须保证能看出两个分句所表达的内容是有联系的。

　　╳ The dam has created dead zones; fish have disappeared.

　　√ The dam has created dead zones, where fish have disappeared.

　　(上面的例子是看不出dead zones和fish到底有何联系，错误。)

　　√ Bill was tormented; the Packers lost again.

　　(第二分句是解释第一分句Bill为什么会tormented，即当第二分句是解释第一分句的时候，使用分号正确。)

　　3. 当两个分句所表达的内容方向不一致时，不能只用分号隔开。必须在分号后面加上However等连接标志。

　　The volcano devastated the town; there was still hope.(分号前后两句方向相反)

　　The volcano devastated the town; however, there was still hope.

　　(当however等连接词前面使用了分号，后面必须有逗号)

　　4. 在并列连词(and、but、for、nor、or、yet、so)前面不能使用分号。

　　╳ I like beer; and my grandmother likes bourbon.

　　5. 像however、therefore、nevertheless、in addition、moreover等这些连接标志前可以用分号，同时连接标志后面要有逗号。

　　6. A minor use of the semicolon is to separate items that themselves contain commas.

　　╳ I listen to Earth, Wind&Fire, Wow, Owls, and Blood, Sweat&Tears.

　　√ I listen to Earth, Wind&Fire; Wow, Owls; and Blood, Sweat&Tears.

　　(在这种情况下and前面可以使用分号，因为分号此时只是将类别划分是句子内容清晰分明)
