    虽然美国大学的录取结果是通过综合考量GPA、标准化考试成绩、以及课外活动等方面，但申请综合排名前50的大学，Essay始终是制胜环节。除了Common Application系统要求的两篇Essay保持不变以外，各学校的Essay题目历年都会有所变化。可无论怎么变，都无外乎几种主要类型。本文对一些常见EssayTopic进行了分类，并将每一类的写作思路和选材角度做了详细介绍。

一、关于Common Application的两篇固定essay

Common Application的两篇固定Essay，让我们描述一个extracurricular activity，另一篇是personal essay，可以选择5个给定的题目，也可以选择topic of your choice，自己命题。

　　描述一个你参与或者组织过的活动，主要描写你在活动中的职责和表现，可以是遇到的困难和挫折，如何去克服，以及这个活动教会你什么。

　　This personal statement helps usbecome acquainted with you in ways different from courses, grades, test scores,and other objective data. It will demonstrate your ability to organize thoughtsand express yourself. We are looking for an essay that will help us know youbetter as a person and as a student. Please write an essay (250 words minimum)on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below.

　　1 Evaluate a significant experience,achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and itsimpact on you.

　　描述一次对你来说比较重要的经历，可以是任何事情，成功的，失败的，以及让你难以抉择的一些困境，这件事情和经历对你产生了什么样的影响。

　　2 Discuss some issue of personal,local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.

　　谈论一件个人的，当地的，国家的或者国际的事情或话题，以及它对你的影响。

　　3 Indicate a person who has had asignificant influence on you, and describe that influence.

　　对你影响比较大的一个人，是什么样的影响呢?

　　4 Describe a character in fiction, anhistorical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) thathas had an influence on you, and explain that influence.

　　描述一个虚构的角色，历史人物，或者是艺术、音乐或者科学里的任何一样对你产生过影响的东西，是什么样的影响。

　　5 A range of academic interests,personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix.Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates whatyou would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter thatdemonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

　　说说你个人的生活背景和经历，并说明这些你特有的经历能给未来的大学带来些什么，或者描述一些能让你体现出与众不同的东西。可以是学习方面的兴趣爱好，个人观点，生活经历。

　　6 Topic of your choice.

　　任何其他你想说的话题。

　　要注意两点，第一，绝对不能超过字数限制，否则即使essay粘贴到框里，提交以后也无法全部显示;第二，无论选择什么素材，都要描述清楚这个事情是关于什么的，学生都做了哪些具体的事，最后，一定要有学生的收获或者体会。

　　Personal Essay应该说是本科申请文书当中比较重要的一个，因为基本上除了UC大学系统、MIT、ColumbiaU、UW-Seattle、U ofWisconsin-Madison等12所大学外，其余前50大学都是通过Common Application系统提交申请。所以如果申请前50大学，这篇Personal Essay几乎所有学校都可以看到。由于前5个题目是命题式的，对选材有很强的局限性且不容易写出新意(比如描述一个对你影响最深的一个人)，我们一般会选择最后一个题目，也就是自己命题，这样我们在写作的时候就有比较大的发挥余地。

　　Personal Essay在写作上，需要注意一下几点：第一，选材上虽然不用非得选择和与所申请专业有关的经历，但我们选择的素材必须要么可以体现学生具备很强的学习能力，沟通能力，要么可以体现学生具备学习所申请专业所必须的潜力;第二，每篇本科essay都是只写一件事，在这一件事情上写出细节，写出亮点，体现出学生的某种特质;第三，在文章长度上，应该在500—800字之间，不宜太短(注意题目要求是250 words minimum，不是maximum)，但也不能太长，至多800字左右。

　　最后，一定要合理安排素材，Common Application的两篇常规文章，和学校的Supplemental Essay，一定不要选择重复的事例。

　　二、关于各学校的Supplemental Essay

　　1. 关于academic interest

　　本科文书并不像研究生那样非要把专业研究得太透彻，也不必非得展示出自己具备很强的研究能力。对于这种本科essay，我们只要从学生的兴趣和所参加过的活动入手就可以了，除非学生真的参加过某个科技创新活动，并且确实有过专利等突出表现。例如，一个申请营养学专业的学生可以从孩子喜欢烹饪的角度写;一个申请生物或者植物学的学生，可以写他从小对花花草草的喜爱。下面是几种常见的问法。

　　(1)In an essay of 300 words or less,please discuss your academic interests and/or professional goals. (UIUC)

　　(2)If you are interested in pursuinga B.S.E. (Bachelor of Science in Engineering) degree, please write an essaydescribing why you are interested in studying engineering, any experiences inor exposure to engineering you have had, and how you think the programs inengineering offered at Princeton suit your particular interests. (PrincetonUniversity)

　　(3)With the understanding that thechoice of academic school you indicated is not binding, explain why you areapplying to that particular school of study. (Rice University)

　　2. 关于一次难忘的、比较重要的经历

　　这样的题目有可能是问你的一次成功的经历，也有可能会让你描述一个自己曾经经历过的失败或者挑战。在回答这种题目的时候，我们中国的学生在选材的时候容易陷入一个误区，我们往往认为只有那些惊天动地的壮举，才可以算作是成功的经历，但却脱离了生活。其实，越贴近生活的事情，就越容易打动别人。我们之前曾经写过两篇类似的文书，一篇是写一个酷爱物理和电学的高中生，在母亲节的时候给妈妈亲手制作了一个非常简易的半导体，“能够永远让妈妈露出开心的笑容，是我一生最大的成就”!这其实只是一个生活中的小事，但却很容易感动别人。另外一篇，是说一个高大健壮的男生，性格却十分腼腆。有一次，班里要求所有同学必须参加话剧演出，他最终克服了自己内心的恐惧和羞怯，勇敢的登上了舞台，并且通过自己的刻苦练习，最终表演成功。这个例子的好处在于，体现了学生用于挑战自我，改变自我的性格。

　　建议大家在处理这类题目的时候，选择一些非常贴近生活，非常真实的小事，并且通过这个小事能体现出学生如何客服种种困难，最终取得满意的结果的过程，就够了。读完之后，让人马上能记住这个学生，就是一篇好文章。下面是几种常见题型：

　　(1)Tell us about a personal quality,talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you.What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does itrelate to the person you are?

　　(2)Stanford students are widely knownto possess a sense of intellectual vitality. Tell us about an idea or anexperience you have had that you find intellectually engaging. (250 words)(Stanford University)

　　(3)Meliora: 'Ever better' - TheUniversity's motto, Meliora, directs our focus toward continual improvementthrough research, understanding, and collaborative efforts. Offer and examplefrom your personal experience of an obstacle you faced or a problem youidentified. Describe the actions you took and the result. (一千字符以内)(U of Rochester)

　　3. 关于以你自己为中心、开放式的题目(无明确内容要求，可随意发挥)

　　这种开放式的题目也很常见，让学生描述自己成长的环境，可以是家庭，可以使社区，也可以是学校，并说明这个环境对学生的影响。这种题目在选材的时候比较自由，但需要注意的是，一定要从一个比较独特的视角去谈，切忌落俗套，千篇一律。我们之前给来自唐山的一个学生写过一篇essay，描写了76年大地震后，自己的家乡是如何经受住考验，自己家乡的人民是如何重建家园，并且以一种感恩的心去回馈整个社会对自己的帮助。唐山人民这种奋斗和不服输的精神也感染了学生，文章就刻画了学生坚强、独立、乐观的形象。最后，学生想要学习经济学的原因是想要benefit the people of the world。

　　开放性题目的问法也很多，例如：

　　类型1

　　(1)Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.(University of California System)

　　(2)There is a Quaker saying: ''Letyour life speak.'' Describe the environment in which you were raised--yourfamily, home, neighborhood or community--and how it influenced the person youare today. (200-250 words，2000字符以内) (Tufts University)

　　类型2

　　Virtually all of Stanford'sundergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate thatreveals something about you or that will help your roommate - and us - know youbetter. (Stanford University)

　　4. 关于你能给学校带来哪些贡献

　　The University of Washington seeks tocreate a community of students richly diverse in cultural backgrounds,experiences, and viewpoints. How would you contribute to this community?(UW-Seattle)

　　很多题目是问：“你能给我们的多元化发展带来哪些贡献?”我们中国学生在提供素材的时候，往往容易陷入另一个误区，总是以中国传统文化为依据去选材。可是随着中国学生在美国的数量日益增加，学校早已厌倦了这种关于琴棋书画的文章，也不指望将来在美国校园展开书法或者国画比赛等活动。学校只是希望通过这个题目，去更深入的了解学生。所以我们在写的时候，可以稍微转换一下角度，从学生的成长环境、家庭背景、文化背景入手。例如，我们曾经服务过一个来自内蒙古的学生，文书当中就充分利用了学生独特的文化背景，将蒙古狼的坚韧品质与学生的性格结合起来。整片文章刻画了学生与狼一样坚韧的性格，追梦想，遇到困难不轻易放弃的精神，使AO相信学生会成为一个优秀的学生，并给大学的多元文化带来贡献。

　　另外，对于“贡献”的理解，也存在偏差。有很多学生，在提供素材的时候说到：“我曾经在某个银行实习了2个月，我对中国银行和金融服务业的观察和反思，是我能带来的贡献。”这种事例显得过于牵强了，毕竟2个月的实习本身含金量就容易让人怀疑，而且这么短的时间，很难深入了解某个领域。其实关于“贡献”，我们可以换一个角度思考。比如，我们写过的一个学生，提供素材的时候说自己喜欢看电影，并且在给当地一个高中做支教的时候，把英文电影欣赏带入了课堂。像Forrest Gump, Seasons of Giving, The Bucket List等电影里传达出的那种积极向上的生活态度，给那些贫困地区的中学生带来了希望和追求梦想的动力。文章最后提到“Gradually, I have become the director of the movie that is my life:I see any difficulty and success, hardship and excitement as an episode, whichmakes my life rich and full. And this positive perspective towards life is whatI want to bring to my overseas study.”

　　虽然美国本科申请的essay topic每年都不一样，但我们写作的原则是始终不变的，既be honest, unique, and yourself。希望本文可以帮助那些正在准备申请和挑战美国名校的学生们更好地在申请文书当中展现一个真实的、独特的自己。

写Essay的几个建议：

1.简洁性。尽管Common Application 建议文章最少要250个单词，没有上限，但是每个招生官每天要阅读大量的申请文章，所以他们希望在几分钟之内就可以读懂一篇文章。如果你写了一篇超过 700字的文章，那你就是在考验他们的耐心了，那是几乎每个招生官都不想面对的。

2.真实性。不要夸大你的成就、头衔或者你所在的部门。仅仅一个报社编辑或者绿色俱乐部的会计就足够了，而不是什么社长或者主席。任何一个人都不是每方面的天才，如果不是过度膨胀自己的成就，也许你会感觉更好一些。

3.个性。在写文章的时候，问一下你自己，“在成千上百的申请者中，包括我不认识的与我认识的人，我应该怎样让自己与众不同？”那不在于你的活动或者兴趣。如果你从高中直接进入了大学，你只是一个青少年，在做青少年该做的事情。让你真正与众不同的是你的思想以及它如何使你脱颖而出。你认为呢？很显然，这是很难解释的，但是这是你区别于别人的最关键的因素。

4.连贯性。很显然，我们都不想在文章里喋喋不休，但是我的意思是写文章要只针对一个主题来写，不要在一篇文章里涵盖各个方面，这样做可能会表现出你在各方面都很忙，但是同时，你的文章也会显得很散乱，很肤浅。整个申请过程就是你的活动的一系列快照。所以不可避免的就会不完整。但是大学要的就是这种效果，所以跟随他们的思路就好了。

5.精确性。我的意思不只是要检查拼写。一篇好的文章还需要注意标点符号的正确使用，如逗号、分号等等。如果你要写Dickens，就不要写Wuthering Heights（呼啸山庄）；如果你要写Nietzsche，就请把他的名字拼写正确。

6.生动性。一篇好的文章经常可以比作是一则故事。在很多情况下，它是发生在一个很重要的瞬间的奇闻轶事。请提供一些细节让读者来了解故事的背景，对故事里的人要使用他们的名字，包括你的哥哥、你的老师或者你的教练。这样会使你的文章更加人性化，也会向读者展现你正在考虑他们对你的文章是否欣赏，当然你肯定希望别人会给出肯定的答案。

7.要表现出你可爱的一面。大学经常把它们自己看成一个小社会，人们必须要和别人相处交流，无论是在宿舍里还是在班级里。你是那个他们想共进晚餐，一起闲逛或者一起讨论的人吗？想一下，“我该怎样和别人交流而不是像个乡巴佬似地只站在一边听别人讲呢？”敏锐一些还是好的。

8.幽默表达要谨慎。你永远不知道不相识的人对你的反应，尤其是当你讲一些比较幽默的事情的时候。幽默往往是旁听者所感觉出来的，所以，除非你觉得不得不来一些幽默的东西，否则会很可笑。对于幽默的使用，要仔细考虑。

9.尽量写有争议性的话题。很多学生会写一些站不住脚的枯燥乏味的文章。只要你权衡了利弊并且考虑清楚了，就可以写一些严肃的话题，如政治或者宗教。不要装作你知道最后的事实，也不要只是对于一个敏感的话题信口开河。对于你的观点，要给出一些合理的根据，同时还要考虑其他的观点。大学是一个观点激烈交锋的地方，并且招生官喜欢思想的多样性。

10.尽量表现聪明的一面。大学是一个充满智慧的地方，甚至在谈论他们宿舍，爬墙或者你可以参加多少活动时，他们都会保守秘密。表现出你智慧的一面是很有帮助的。你的思想里现在出现了什么？那不是你要宣读的要选的专业，真正重要的是为什么这个专业让你感兴趣。

下面举一些2012年美国留学新生申请的部分essay：

1.杜兰大学：

As part of your application for admission, a personal statement isrequired. 7.罗格斯新泽西州立大学-新伯朗士威

Required Essay: Rutgers University is avibrant community of people with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.How would you benefit from and contribute to such an environment? Considervariables such as your talents, travels, leadership activities, volunteerservices, and cultural experiences.

最多3800个字符这个题目其实就是问你能为该学校的community做出什么贡献，也就是问你有什么优势。这个问题是问的很广的，几乎你有任何想让学校知道的优势都可以写，比如他给列出的某方面的天赋，某此旅行甚至出国游学，体现你领导才能的一次活动，志愿者工作等等。你可以先写一项活动，然后写一下从中体现出你的什么品质，然后说这个品质可以为学校做出贡献。
